There are symbols that carry meaning before a word is ever spoken. The crown of thorns is one of them. It represents suffering, sacrifice, faith and the strength to endure what cannot always be avoided.
Crown of Thorn came from that idea. This solid brass challenge coin draws from one of Christianity’s most recognizable symbols, not simply as an image of suffering, but as a reminder that hardship and purpose can exist together.
THE IDEA BEHIND CROWN OF THORN
The crown of thorns has carried its meaning for centuries. In Christian tradition, it represents the suffering of Christ, but also sacrifice, humility and perseverance through pain.
This piece was created around that contrast. The thorns were intentionally designed to feel harsh and unforgiving, representing the suffering Jesus endured, while their circular form becomes almost crown-like, turning an image of suffering into one of endurance and faith.
A HANDMADE BRASS COIN
Each coin begins as a thick blank of solid brass and is individually engraved in deep sculpted relief. The raised surfaces are polished while the recessed areas are darkened by hand, creating the contrast and depth that define each piece.
Every coin is engraved, darkened, polished and finished by hand in Québec, Canada. Small variations in tone and finish are part of the process, making each piece slightly different from the next.
