We are rarely only one thing.
Duality explores the contradictions that can exist within the same person. Strength beside vulnerability. Confidence beside doubt. Calm beside anger. We often think of these qualities as opposites, when in reality they can exist together.
Duality came from that idea. This solid brass challenge coin brings two opposing faces together around a central skull. Rather than representing death, the skull strips away the exterior and exposes what both sides ultimately share. Different expressions, different identities, but part of the same whole.
THE IDEA BEHIND DUALITY
This piece is about accepting contradiction rather than deciding which side is the “real” one. The person we show the world and the person we keep private can both be genuine.
The central skull acts as the common structure beneath those different faces. Remove expression, appearance and perception, and much of what separates them disappears.
A HANDMADE BRASS COIN
Each coin begins as a thick blank of solid brass and is individually engraved in deep sculpted relief. The raised surfaces are polished while the recessed areas are darkened by hand, creating the contrast and depth that define each piece.
The reverse features engraved blackletter typography, keeping the message as much a part of the object as the artwork itself.
Every coin is engraved, darkened, polished and finished by hand in Québec, Canada. Small variations in tone and finish are part of the process, making each piece slightly different from the next.

MORE THAN AN OBJECT
Duality was made to be held, carried and revisited. Keep it as a pocket piece, display it as a small work of brass art, or let it serve as a reminder that opposing parts of ourselves do not necessarily cancel each other out.
We are not one side or the other. We are the whole.
